About the Founder
Sophia Fan
President/Founder
Sophia Fan is an upcoming senior at Urbana High School in Maryland. AP Cycle was founded when Sophia was 13 years old, after recognizing how many academic resources go unused while students in other communities lack access to them. The initiative was created to bridge that gap by redistributing educational materials to where they are needed most.
What began as a local effort has grown into a broader initiative focused on education access globally, including support for multilingual and diverse learning environments. The goal is to make learning resources more accessible and widely shared across communities.
 Founder's Story
Sophia Fan founded AP Cycle after recognizing a consistent gap in educational access among students. She observed that many students were capable and hardworking, but lacked the academic resources needed to fully succeed in their courses.
Her perspective on access was also shaped by personal experience. As someone whose first language was not English, she understands the challenges of adapting to new environments. Over time, she began noticing similar patterns across different settings. In healthcare environments, she saw how access to resources influenced outcomes even before treatment began. In education, she observed the same issue: students with equal effort achieving different results due to unequal access.
These experiences led her to create AP Cycle, a student-led initiative focused on collecting and redistributing educational materials. What began as a small effort to reuse AP books has grown into a broader organization aimed at improving access to learning resources globally, including in multilingual and diverse learning environments.
